In short. Options whose study position is stronger, and the questions that decide between them. A comparison rather than a ranking, including the option of no treatment.

Key points

  • Ask what each option requires of you: how many visits, how much recovery, how long the change is expected to hold, and what happens if you stop.
  • Two options can look similar on a price list and be entirely different commitments, and the commitment is the part you live with.

Comparing options is more useful than comparing prices, and the comparison worth making is not which treatment is best in general but which one answers your particular complaint. What follows sets the alternatives beside this one without ranking them, because the right answer depends on facts about you that no page can supply.

Where the goal is the surface of the skin

A standardised injectable built on a single studied substance is a different proposition from a prepared mixture, because its contents are known, its study record exists and its behaviour is predictable. Treatments that work on the skin surface directly, including resurfacing with fine needles and chemical peeling, also have their own evidence and their own risks. Each is usually compared with mesotherapy rather than combined with it, and each has a recovery period to weigh rather than a course of visits.

Where the goal is volume, lift or a scar

These are not close calls. A filler holds a shape and a mixture does not, so where volume is the goal the comparison is between fillers and fat transfer rather than between this and anything. Where tissue has descended, the options are surgical or energy-based lifting. Where a scar is the complaint, the options are resurfacing and scar treatments. In each case the alternative is a different answer to a different question.

Compare the commitment, not just the treatment

Ask what each option requires of you: how many visits, how much recovery, how long the change is expected to hold, and what happens if you stop. Two options can look similar on a price list and be entirely different commitments, and the commitment is the part you live with.

Where the goal is your own tissue rather than a substance

Some patients are drawn to this treatment because it does not involve a manufactured product. That instinct is reasonable, and it does not make mesotherapy the answer, because the mixtures are often prepared products too. Options using your own tissue exist and carry their own uncertainties about how much of the effect is the treatment.

And where the goal is nothing at all

No treatment is a genuine option and it is frequently the best one. Where the skin has changed in the ordinary way for your age and nothing about it worries you except that a treatment was offered, the comparison is between a course of visits and none, and the second has no risks and no fading.

These comparisons are not being made for you

  • That one option is presented as the modern choice and the others as outdated.
  • That a stronger study record is described as a marketing claim rather than a fact.
  • That doing nothing is not mentioned as an option at all.

Why some uses have been studied and most have not is set out in What the Evidence Supports, and the case for spending nothing is made in When the Honest Answer Is That You Do Not Need This.

Frequently asked questions

Does a stronger study record mean I should choose that option?

Not on its own. A stronger study record means the question has been asked and answered for a group of people rather than left open, which is a real advantage when you are deciding. Whether it is the right option for you still depends on your skin, your goal and what you can commit to, and that is what an assessment is for.

What if I have already paid for a course of mesotherapy?

Finish it or stop it, but ask for the record either way, so that what was injected is written down somewhere you can find it. If a plan is being renewed, it is reasonable to ask what has changed since the last course and what the next one is meant to achieve that the last one did not.

Is doing nothing really a fair option to consider?

It is a fair option and often the right one. A change in the surface of the skin is not urgent, nothing about it gets materially harder to treat in a year, and a decision deferred costs you nothing except a result you did not have. Choosing it deliberately is different from never getting round to deciding.

Risks & Limitations

  • Mesotherapy names a technique, not a product. The mixture is often prepared rather than manufactured, and it has not been assessed as a mixture.
  • Any change reported is usually modest, lies in surface quality rather than in volume, and fades without further sessions.
  • Firm lumps and delayed reactions can appear weeks to months after a session, and the date they appear is part of how they are assessed.
  • A mixture is not standardised between clinics or between sessions, so the evidence for one plan says nothing about the next.

When to Seek Care

  • Severe pain out of proportion to the procedure, or skin turning white, grey, mottled or dusky, needs immediate assessment.
  • Any change in vision after an injection requires emergency care.
  • Fever, or redness, warmth or discharge at a treated area that is spreading rather than settling.
  • A firm lump or nodule appearing weeks or months later, which should be reported when noticed rather than at a review.
